DRAFT OF THE HOMILY

What do we celebrate today in the Church Calendar?

And what about in the Civil Calendar?

USA: Veterans Day.

Canada: Remembrance Day.

What is the origin for that day?

End of WWI.

When was that?

In 1918 at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Concretely, today is a special day to honor those who served in the military, or those who are serving right now.

In a special way we can remember those who served up to laying down their lives in the line of duty, for our freedom.

We should pray in thanksgiving for those men and women who fulfilled their civil duty to defend our country.

It is timely that this civic holiday falls on this month of November, when we also celebrate the Holy Day of the Feast of all the Saints.

It falls that at the same time we honor those who served our country, we also honor those who gave up their lives serving for the Army of God.

In their own ways, both fulfilled the words of Jesus:

Lk 20,25 Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

In the eyes of God and for us the Church, the Saints are the Veterans who have already received from God the ultimate Medal of Honor.

The General of the Army of God, their beloved Chief Captain has awarded them a crown.

Like Peter reminds all of us who are trying to serve in the army of the Lord of hosts: 1 Pet 5,4 And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

We should also pray for those who died in the battle and are now in the process of waiting their final reward.

Like Judas in the book of Maccabees.

2 Macc 12,42 Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out.

2 Macc 12,43 In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection in mind; 44for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead.

For us too we believe in the Resurrection. Amen?

So let us pray for those who have not yet reached the heavenly court, and are now in the spiritual military court.

Those are the ones in purgatory waiting for the final release of their file from the Lord for heroic service and full reward in Heaven.

Both those types of heroes, the military ones and the spiritual ones, should be examples for us, examples in the virtue of self-sacrifice.

We have enough proofs of the harshness of war listening to the news, or listening to personal testimonies of people who served in the military to understand the notion of sacrifice for their countries.

Let us pray specifically today for the many who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

Let us pray for all of us to have courage in the battle the Lord is calling us.

We all know the Battle that sometimes rages inside our hearts.

This deadly battle for our souls.

Battle between good and evil.

Today I want to be invested with the medal of honor of the Cross of Our only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I want to put on the armor of God of Eph 6 with the sword of the Spirit.

I want to be instructed by God to (Lk 20,25) repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

I want to know what the Lord wants me to do to serve my country, and how to serve Him better through that.

Sometimes we can be thorn between civil duty and duty to serve God.

The saint of the day was Himself a “conscientious objector”

From Wikipedia: Martin determined that his faith prohibited him from fighting, saying, "I am a soldier of Christ. I cannot fight." He was charged with cowardice and jailed, but in response to the charge, he volunteered to go unarmed to the front of the troops. His superiors planned to take him up on the offer, but before they could, the invaders sued for peace, the battle never occurred, and Martin was released from military service.

Finally, let us pray for our military leaders and the leaders of our countries.

Let us pray for them so that they receive the grace to understand and apply the concept of just war.

I will conclude with a quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I will have a copy of my homily with that quote at the end of Mass if you would like to study it more closely.

2309 The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. At one and the same time: -1- the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain; -2- all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;

-3- there must be serious prospects of success; -4- the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modern means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.

These are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the "just war" doctrine.

The evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good.
